Olive Oil the Better Diet Food

For those who want to live a healthy life, new research has shown that daily use of olive oil in your meal is especially beneficial. In fact the use of olive oil seems to be even more beneficial then eating a slice of whole wheat bread. This is the result of research by members of the Johns Hopkins University on a comparison between three "health plans".

A diet rich in olive oil lowers blood pressure and cholesterol more so a diet rich in carbohydrates. Compared to a high protein food, a diet rich in olive oil is easier to digest.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins studied the DASH diet. (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). This plan was developed several years ago to help people with high blood pressure problems. The researchers compared two alternative schemes to DASH and published their findings in the Journal of American Medical Association

The DASH diet is high in carbohydrates. You eat muesli for breakfast, whole grain bread for lunch and pasta for dinner. This is combined with fish, chicken and nuts and olive oil

The other two diets tested are rich in protein and carbohydrate rich variation of the DASH diet, but not olive oil.

All three diets did lower blood pressure and cholesterol significantly but the diet containing olive oil has emerged as the most effective. It lowers blood pressure and cholesterol just a little more. And these factors are an important determinant of long-term onset of cardiovascular disease.

All research participants said it was easy enough to comply with each of them. But participants in the protein-rich variety complained more often about digestive problems and as a result of this, they tend to be less physically active, then the control group.

So it's a result that supports their Mediterranean diets with high-grade fish (omega 3) and Olive Oil content even more.
